I've been receiving lots of mail lately concerning a somewhat ominous subject...dun dun dun...The Job Search.

So, this week's Hot Hepburn Hint is dedicated to you, o seeker of employment... wielder of the resume...the one without work...okay you get the idea. This week's Hot Hepburn Hint is...

NETWORK WITH CLASS!

When entering the market, you usually have some general idea/dream/goal of the job or career you'd like. And most of us are aware that dream gig is a long way off, but we've got to start somewhere, right? It sounds like many of you are in this position, and wondering, "Where in the heck do I even start?"

First, do some research of your field - scope out websites of companies you'd like to work for, check out the offices of your ideal workplace, scribble down names/numbers/emails of potential contacts that could be helpful, etc.

Next, make contact. Email or call those offices and people to arrange informal coffee or lunch dates to simply pick their brains. Don't go into the meeting with an estimated income figure or 401k plan, simply ask them about their job, get information about their company, and learn as much as you can about their day-to-day duties. Most of them will, in turn, ask you about yourself and your goals. Here's your chance to offer them a sneak-peek of what they could have. Without being overly stalker-ish, inform them of your skills and interest in their job field. Many of them will be kind enough to inform you of potential job openings within the company, or possible career opportunities. Don't forget to exchange contact info.

Lastly, follow up. After your get-together, send said contact a hand-written thank you note expressing your appreciation of their time. In my opinion, there is no substitute for an old fashioned thank you note!

I've seen informal meetings like this lead to full time jobs dozens of times. If you're kind, professional, and considerate of their time, many prospective employers are happy to take a minute out of their day and meet with a young up-and-comer. If nothing else, you've gained a friendly contact within the industry. You never know where it might lead.
